Top 5 Activities to Play at Children's Birthday Parties

We know that planning a birthday for your little one is super exciting. After all, who doesn’t love a good birthday party?!

But we also know that creating the right mix of children’s birthday games can be challenging!

Below, we’ve compiled our list of top party activities for when you need a helping hand. They’re fun, easy to implement, and will guarantee the best party experience for everyone.

  1. Musical Chairs

A long-time favourite and classic game for very good reasons! Musical chairs is sure to get plenty of giggles. All you need is some space, some chairs (one less than the total number of children playing) and a playlist.

How to Play: Set up the chairs in a line or circle and hit play on your playlist. The children need to dance around the chairs until you hit pause on the music (after about 30-60 seconds). When the music stops, the children need to find a seat; whoever is left standing is out. Repeat and remove a chair for each game round, and see who makes it as the final champion!

MiniTown Top Tip: Ask each child to share their favourite song or two to add to the playlist.

  1. Treasure Hunt

This one might take a little more planning, but the payoff is worth it! You’ll need a few pieces of ‘treasure,’ such as small tokens, pretend coins, or anything else you think would be suitable.

How to Play: Hide the ‘treasure’ tokens around your home or party venue in different locations. Split the children into teams and get them to create a pirate name for their group. Tell them there’s treasure hidden, and they need to find as much of it as possible! The team that finds the most treasure gets a bonus prize at the end.

MiniTown Top Tip: Track where you hide the treasure so you know when everything has been found.

  1. Makeshift Escape Room

Turn your living room or party venue into an exciting escape room! With clever clues and simple puzzles, you can tailor the difficulty based on the children’s age group and enlist a few adults to help guide the fun.

How to Play: Create riddles, puzzles, or other activities that the children need to complete to ‘unlock’ the next challenge. They can work in teams or as one group. This is a brilliant way to encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and lots of laughter!

Top Tip: Why not theme your party and use the theme to help create your escape room? Some popular themes include animals, superheroes or space!

  1. Balloon Party Games

Balloon games are an excellent activity. As most parties already include balloons, these games are easy to do, and they use what you have to hand!

How to Play: Some options include a POP Relay Race, where children split into teams and need to take turns to pop a balloon by sitting on it; each team member needs to wait for the person before them to pop their balloon before they can pop theirs! The teams can race each other to see who can pop all the balloons first. Another balloon game is Pass the Balloon. This one involves the children standing in a circle, and they need to pass a balloon around the circle without using their hands. For extra fun, you can add a countdown!MiniTown Top Tip: Always have a few extra balloons blown up and ready to go. Some will inevitably pop early or fly off mid-game, and having spares on hand keeps the fun going without delays.

  1. Craft Station

A craft table is a great way to keep kids engaged and let their creativity shine. It’s a calm, independent option perfect for winding down between high-energy games.

How to Play: Set up a space with simple supplies like paper, stickers, glue, coloured pencils, pipe cleaners, and googly eyes. Choose an easy, age-appropriate activity, like decorating party hats, making masks, or creating themed cards.

MiniTown Top Tip: Cover the table with butcher’s paper or a cheap plastic tablecloth for quick clean-up and have old shirts handy to protect party clothes!
