Most of us enjoy a nice cafe routine. Whether it’s a mid-morning coffee run with colleagues in the week or a nice Sunday morning ritual to finish your weekend, cafe culture is a huge part of Australian life.
But what happens when you need to add your kids into the mix?
Obviously, you can’t order them a large flare white! But if you’re left scratching your head over good alternatives, we’ve got you covered.Â
Our list of child-friendly drink orders, found in most cafes, will help you maintain your caffeine fix while introducing your kids to the wonderful world of cafe culture.
Introduce them to cafe culture with a babycino.
A babycino is a kiddo version of a cappuccino - minus the espresso!Â
This warm, sweet drink is a big hit with children of all ages. They love the gently heated milk foam and the dusting of delicious cocoa powder.Â
Many cafes serve a babycino in an espresso-sized cup with a saucer, creating the ‘real deal’ experience. Some also offer additions such as marshmallows for a real treat!
Babycinos can be made with most milk alternatives, including oat milk, dairy-free milk, or other nut milks.
Your little one will feel like a ‘grown-up’ minus the caffeine energy spike!

Refuel with a fresh milkshake.
Milkshakes are another popular alternative with many children. They’re filling, sweet, and usually available in the most popular flavours, including strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla.Â
Some cafes offer milkshakes in a wider range of flavours with delicious toppings such as ice cream, whipped cream, or fresh fruit.
If you’re setting up camp for a couple of hours of soft play, a milkshake can be a great alternative to give your child a gentle energy boost they can burn off while running around!

Tick off some nutrition with a smoothie.
A smoothie is an excellent choice if you’re looking for something a bit healthier. Many cafes stock fresh, nutritious pre-packaged smoothies that can be a great contribution to your child’s recommended daily intake of fruit and vegetables. Other cafes may make a range of smoothies on site, meaning you may be able to tailor them to suit your child’s preferences (it is always good to check with cafe staff about that before mentioning it to your child to avoid tantrums!).

Quench thirst with a juice.
A soft juice drink is a good option if your child prefers something lighter and thirst-quenching.Â
Many cafe owners know that children can sometimes be a little fussy about their juice drink preferences and will stock some of the main favourites children know and love.
It’s always worth checking the label on pre-packaged juice drinks, as they may contain excessive sugar, but if your child is about to spend an hour or two charging around at soft play or birthday party activities, it could be the fuel they need.

Warm up (or cool down) with a matcha
Whether served warm or iced, a matcha can be a refreshing low-sugar alternative many kids love!Â
Matcha has a range of benefits. The combination of caffeine and L-theanine provides a sustained energy boost that can support children while they play. Matcha can be made (and tastes great) with a range of milks to suit different dietary needs.
As matcha does contain caffeine, it’s essential to be mindful of how much young children consume, and it’s generally recommended for older children.Â

Keep it simple and rehydrate with water.
Especially in the summer months, it’s always worth remembering that staying hydrated with water is essential.
Whether venturing to a local cafe or heading to a busy play date or birthday party, ensuring your child drinks plenty of fresh water is a must so they stay hydrated, energised, and ready to enjoy every moment.
