4 Traditional Birthday Customs For Every Family

Around the world, birthdays are filled with rituals, customs and traditions that help make the day special. Some traditions are connected to cultural preferences, and others are just for fun! 

Whatever ‘traditions’ means to you, there are plenty to explore and add to your day to add meaning and joy.

1. A Birthday Cake.

A special birthday cake is the epitome of a birthday tradition! 

Throughout the world, many people celebrate birthdays with cakes or traditional sweet treats. A central birthday cake, cut up and shared amongst birthday attendees, is a favourite part of many celebrations!

In many countries, the birthday cake is presented with a song that everyone joins in to sing their wishes to the birthday person. In some cultures, the birthday person offers the first slice to their first person, and in others, it is offered by the youngest to the oldest attendee. 

However you want to add in a cake, there are plenty of ways to make it a special moment. 

2. Making a Birthday Wish.

Following on closely from the birthday cake is the time-honoured tradition of making a special birthday wish!

This is usually done when blowing out the birthday candles on the cake, but it can be a tradition that you celebrate in a number of ways. 

Perhaps you ask all birthday attendees to take a moment to write down a birthday wish for the birthday child in the year ahead. Or it could be something you acknowledge as a family before bedtime, inviting your child to take a moment to think about their day and make a wish for their new lap around the sun.

3. Bringing Family and Friends Together.

This might be the most important birthday tradition of them all. 

Birthday parties, especially for children, are the perfect opportunity to get all of your family, friends and loved ones together to spend a day or afternoon celebrating, enjoying good food, games, and a chance to catch up (often hard to do in busy parent lives!)

While the day is always about the birthday child, this chance to set aside dedicated time for everyone to get together is a wonderful custom not to be missed.

4. Acknowledgement of Country

Traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures didn't historically celebrate individual birthdays in the Western sense. Instead, life stages were marked through seasonal cycles and ceremony.

Today, many Indigenous Australian families blend both worlds, and all families can draw inspiration from this. Consider opening your birthday celebration with a simple Acknowledgement of Country as a moment to pause and give thanks to the Traditional Custodians of the land where you're gathering. It doesn't need to be elaborate; even a few words about what it means to you to live where you do, honouring the land and its people, can bring meaning and gratitude to the occasion.
